Supplements for Hair Growth

There are supplement companies making a lot of promises and using clever marketing to sell you supplements.

Saw Palmetto. Has been proven to slow hair loss and grow more hair. At 320 mg per day. A year's supply should cost less than $100. You can take it once a day or 160 mg twice a day (that adds up to 320 mg). So if you have the most common type of hair loss Androgenic Alopecia or AGA this affects 80% of men and 50% of women. Saw Palmetto proven to help with that. It works by suppressing your serum DHT. Serum DHT accelerates your hair loss in areas of your scalp where you have scalp tension. In areas where you don’t have scalp tension DHT will not accelerate hair loss. The real enemy is scalp tension. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30980598/

AndroGenic Alopecia or AGA is driven by scalp tension and you can get rid of it yourself in as little as ten minutes a day and we are happy to show you how to do it for free. Just book a free consultation and we will test you for it and if you have it, show you how to get rid of it yourself for free. Click here to book a free consultation.

Ashwagandha - There are no studies showing Ashwagandha helps grow hair. There is some low quality data that suggests it can help with anxiety and stress. And if stress is driving your hair loss it could be a mild benefit. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36017529/

What about Biotin? Biotin has not been shown to grow hair in clinical trials for normal people. If you have a severe deficiency of Biotin (which is rare) it can help you grow hair. And that is information that clever marketers use to get you to buy their product. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28879195/

What is Seasonal Telogen Effluvium? Normally between 5% and 12% of your hair follicles are in a shed or telogen phase at any given time. For most people In the winter more hair will be in a shed phase so it will be closer to 12% and in the summer most people be closer to 5% so most people in North America will have less hair on their head in April and more hair on their head in October. This is normal and to be expected. Sometimes due to a stressor, way more than 12% can go into a shed phase. This is called regular Telogen Effluvium. Poor diet, thyroid, hormones, lack of sleep, weight loss, grieving, childbirth and other life events can trigger abnormal shedding. Depending on the cause there are simple things we can do to mitigate the problem and get your hair back in a growth cycle.

What about nutrafol? We used to carry them and when we first started carrying them the rep told me that they would never sell direct to consumers and they had research that proved their product helped people grow hair. I only read the abstract of the study (lazy on my part) and it showed it helped grow hair, so we started carrying them. Within 6 months they started selling directly to consumers, so their sales person lied to me no big deal, not the first sales rep to lie to me. Then I went back and read their study. It was set up to exclude everyone with a diagnosed hair loss condition and only really include people with seasonal Telogen Effluvium. So they excluded everyone with AGA, the most common type of hair loss and only included people that were very likely to grow their hair back. They tested them in April when most people have the least amount of hair on their head and restested them in October when most people have the most hair on their head. This is why they have been accused of false advertising. They started a second clinical trial that was to include people with AGA but they never published the results of that study. I believe they never published it because it didn’t show positive results for their product and that is why I stopped carrying it. It's an overpriced multivitamin with Saw Palmetto. You can get an extremely high quality multivitamin, multi mineral for a couple of hundred dollars a year. I think paying 800 to 1000 for a year of nutrafol for a lesser product does not make sense.

Sea Kelp-- Sea Kelp has not been shown to grow hair. Sea kelp is high in iodine and if you are low in iodine taking Sea Kelp could help your thyroid work better. If your hair loss is from your thyroid malfunction that theoretically could help your hair. But if you have normal levels of iodine, it could hurt you https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11396708/ and cause you to lose hair. So do not randomly take a supplement that could hurt you.

Do you have a deficiency or imbalance causing you to lose your hair? Testing your blood thoroughly for deficiencies is a great place to start. If you do not have insurance we charge $199 to thoroughly test your liver, kidneys, heart, thyroid, hormones and other inflammation markers looking for imbalances and deficiencies. The $199 includes having a licensed medical professional review your blood work and health history and discuss with you what may or may not be contributing to the health of your hair. We like to recommend supplements based on your blood work. Most people take supplements randomly and for no objective reason, they do not know if it is the right supplement at the right time in the right amount to help them. Or if it is even helping them or making them worse. Your Health and Hair are too important to randomly guess. When you're ready please book a free consultation with a hair loss specialist to review what's going on with you.
